Resumo | In the tropical Atlantic Ocean is a complex surface current system related to the inter-hemispheric heat and salt budget. This mainly zonal system is modulated by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) meridional displacement. The strong equatorial currents, by carrying north and south Atlantic waters, affects the sea surface temperature (SST) field. The coupled ocean-atmospheric system variability forecast is limited to our ability in determine the SST spatial distribution. Therefore, it is necessary to better understand the ocean dynamics related to this coupled system. The first step is to investigate the velocity field. Model outputs and observations together is the best methodology to address this important issue. In this way, a Vessel-Mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (VM-ADCP) data set as part of the Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) program were used. Velocity maps from the ship tracks of annual PIRATA expeditions were taken since 1998. Ocean General Circulation Model (OGCM) and Coupled Ocean and Atmospheric General Circulation Model (CGCM) velocities were compared to the direct-observed field. The OGCM is the Modular Ocean Model version 3 (MOM3). The grid meridional resolution is 0.2 degrees between 20S and 20N, changing to one degree up to 40 degrees of latitudes north and south. There are 20 levels in the vertical with 18 levels within the first 500 m depth. The CPTEC Atmospheric GCM has triangular truncation at wave number 62 in the horizontal, 28 sigma levels in the vertical, and RAS cumulus parametrization scheme. Statistics between model and observed velocity fields (BIAS and RMS) were computed to evaluate the ocean and coupled model simulations. |
